- The purpose of in text referencing is to show where a specific piece of
information comes from such as a quote, a statistic or an argument.

- Try to answer these questions:

- I can state that Israel was founded in 1948 without citing it because
it’s considered common knowledge.

- I used ideas from an article I read throughout an entire paper, so I
only need to put a reference at the END of the paper.

- It is impossible for my teacher to find something that I have taken from
the Web or a database and used as my own work.

- Presenting the ideas of others as your own
- Using part or whole of another’s work without crediting the source
- Passing in your own old work as newly created work (i.e., a paper from
last year)
- Passing in the exact same paper to two different courses without
explicit permission from both instructors

- Keep track of all of your sources.
- Make sure you cite every borrowed idea or text.
- As you draft, give credit when using:
- 1. Others’ concepts or opinions
- 2. Quotes from others’ spoken or written ideas
- 3. Other people’s summaries

- The best way is to immediately
type or write the in-text citation into your draft.
|
|

- It is not necessary to reproduce the full reference from your
bibliography.
- You must give enough information so that the reader can identify from
which resource in your Works Cited page the information was taken

- If the author’s name is
mentioned in the text of the paper, then the page number or numbers
should be placed in parentheses after the quoted, paraphrased,
summarized, or restated material.

- The citation should be placed
as close to the referenced materials as possible and within the
punctuation.

- Use the part of the bibliographic citation which appears first, such as
the title of a book, the title of an article or the name on a web page,
followed by the page or other specific location information. (“Dogma” 45).

- However if you hand in a print-out of the website, your teacher may
require you to use the page number of the printed copy.
